Chef Prize 2016 was a hit:
On September 11th, 500 “foodies” descended on Hampton Green Farm in Fruitport, MI to sample food from 22 local restaurants, 5 local bakeries, and 4 local adult beverage providers. The attendees were treated to food, tours of the world class training facilities, ice carving, and food demonstrations. Seven judges (including Peter Secchia, a professor from MSU’s the Hospitality School of Business, the dean of the Michigan Culinary Institute, the mayor of Norton Shores, the Owner of Hampton Green Farms, and a chef from the Chicago restaurant Bistronomics) sampled food from seven of the top restauranants and named Executive Chef Charles Forrester from The Lake House Waterfront Grille as the winner of the 2016 Chef Prize. The weather was perfect for this first time event! Congratulations to our 2016 Outstanding Junior Awardees:
On Wednesday, October 12th our 2016, Outstanding Junior Awardees (OJA) were recognized and honored at our annual OJA Luncheon. Each year, the West Michigan Spartans award juniors from our four county area (Kent, Ottawa, Barry, and Allegan counties) an opportunity for a $1,000 Scholarship to be used toward their tuition at MSU after successful completion of their first semester. This scholarship helps encourage students to attend MSU by providing an early incentive. Approximately 100 people attended the luncheon. Each OJA winner, along with their parents, school principal and counselor were invited. We were honored to have Dr. Bess German (Assistant Dean of MSU’s Honors College), Jim Cotter (Director of MSU’s Admissions Office), and Mike Kolar (Assistant Director of MSU’s Admissions Office) attend the luncheon. Both Dr. German and Jim Cotter gave motivational and passionate speeches about our wonderful University and the #SPARTANSWILL motto. After lunch, the students mingled with other awardees and talked with the representatives from MSU. Once again we want to congratulate these students on their outstanding high school accomplishments, and wish them all the best as they make their college decisions!
President Simon Visits West Michigan:
The West Michigan Spartans were honored to have President Lou Anna K. Simon as the guest speaker at our July 19th Speaker's Series Event. President Simon discussed the evolution of MSU's successful global brand known as #SPARTANSWILL, and further discussed how every Spartan can incorporate #SPARTANSWILL in all aspects of their lives. Every guest left the luncheon encouraged and inspired, and we thank President Simon for taking time out of her busy schedule to talk with us!
