Speaker's Series Luncheon featuring Mark Rieth

Our first Speaker’s Series of the year will be held on Monday, March 27th at Kent Country Club.  Mark Rieth, President, CEO, and owner of Atwater Brewery will be our guest speaker. Mr. Rieth is a graduate of MSU, and before investing in the brewery market pursued a career in the automobile industry.  Mark’s passion for beer, and wanting to play a role in reviving Michigan led him to the purchase of Atwater Brewery.  Under his guidance and knowledge the brewery has grown exponentially.  In October 2016, Mr. Rieth expanded the brewery by opening a new location here in Grand Rapids! Mark bleeds green and to prove this, he will tell us the story behind his new Reach Higher craft beer dedicated to MSU athletics using the term coined by Coach Dantonio for the 2015 season.  Join us to hear his story.  His fun, laid back, personality guarantees this to be an exciting luncheon!

Enjoyable Evening - MSU Means Business Event

On Monday, November 21st, The West Michigan Spartans hosted their annual, MSU Means Business Event.  Approximately 100 people attended.  The evening began with a Panel Discussion, which discussed, “West Michigan as a HUB for International Business.”  The panel featured Dr. Tomas Hult (Byington Endowed Chair and Professor at MSU), Jim Teets (President & CEO of ADAC Automotive), and Scott Fiser (Senior Relationship Manager at Bank of America| Merrill Lynch).  We thank each of them for leading the discussion, and offering their vast knowledge on the topic!  Immediately following the Panel Discussion was a reception where guests had the opportunity to network with fellow Spartans while enjoying a cocktail and appetizers from Honey Creek Inn.  The evening ended with Norman Byrne (CEO, Byrne Electrical Specialists) receiving our, “West Michigan Business Person of the Year Award!  We congratulate Norman Byrne on all he has done for our West Michigan Community through his work!

    Coat Drive was a Success!

The West Michigan Spartans along with the Meritage Group and Duckett Enterprises teamed up to gather winter coats, gloves, and hats for children in Grand Rapids.  The Coat Drive gathered over 400+ coats, which were distributed to GRPS public school children at their parent - teacher conferences.  They celebrated the coat drive’s success with an assembly at Sibley Elementary where Todd Duckett gave an inspiring speech, and took pictures with the students.  At the end of the assembly each student was given a hat and mittens!

MSU vs. ND Watch Party was a Success!

On September 17th, 3,500 fans watched the Spartan football team defeat the Fighting Irish on a 32’ x 18’ LED television set up in Ah-Nab-Awen Park in downtown Grand Rapids… on the banks of the Grand River.  The crowd grew throughout the night reaching 3,500 at half-time.  The crowd watched a trailer for a new documentary on MSU’s 1966 team that fought the national champion Fighting Irish to 10-10, and observed a moment of silence for fallen MSU All-American Mike Sadler who graduated from Forest Hills Northern.  His mother, Karen Sadler, talked about Mike’s legacy and the formation of the Michael Sadler Foundation.  The West Michigan Spartans presented a check for $5,000 to help fund the foundation that will help local students attend MSU.  While rain fell prior to the event, the evening was perfect to watch our football team post a huge victory.  Drone pictures of the event can be found on our Facebook group, MSU Club of West Michigan.
