  • Freshman Picnic was a success!

The West Michigan Spartans held their annual Freshman Picnic on June 1st at Johnson Park.  All Fall 2016 – MSU Freshman and their families were invited to attend.  Although it rained most of the afternoon, the sun came out just in time for the picnic!  Over 120 new Spartans and their families enjoyed a BBQ, tailgate - style dinner while socializing with other incoming freshman.  After dinner our new Spartans met with current MSU students, and had the opportunity to ask questions about student life while their parents met with Admissions Office Representatives and MSU Alumni to learn more about student life, financial aid, living facilities and student activities.  Overall, it was a wonderful evening and everyone left with a great amount of Spartan Spirit!

West Michigan Spartans at The Phantom of the Opera

Nearly 300 Spartans gathered at the DeVos Performance Center to enjoy the Broadway Grand Rapids’ performance of The Phantom of the Opera.  The evening began with photo opportunities with Sparty who was dressed as the Phantom!  Spartans sat together in a reserved block of seats located in the center of the theatre a few rows from the stage with a great view the legendary chandelier.  The choreography, singing, and special effects of the Phantom kept you on the edge of your seats.  The evening ended with an informative, talk back session with four members of the cast including an MSU grad (yay!) and a UM fan (that got boos!).  While we can’t release a date yet be sure to hold a Friday in October 2017 for Wicked’s first trip to Grand Rapids.  With the star of the show being green, it is a no-brainer selection for our next group performance!

West Michigan Spartans - Day of Service

On April 16th, the West Michigan Spartans and Michigan State Extension 4-H Program of Kent County hosted a fun and rewarding service project and book drive.  Youth and Adults from the West Michigan area gathered together and created colorful, fleece blankets for children and teens in the hospital or in another situation in which they would benefit from a special hand-made gift.  In less than a few hours they created over 50 blankets and collected over 50 books!  Thank you to all of those who volunteered their time!
